Big games won

In their 88-48 rout of SMU, UConn broke their own consecutive winning streak by notching their 91st straight win.

Here’s the NCAA’s statement on the new record:

Statement from Anucha Browne, NCAA Vice President, Women’s Basketball Championships:

“Congratulations to Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies on the sustained excellence it has taken to establish a new consecutive games won record. Even though they make it look easy at times, 91 wins and counting is an unbelievable accomplishment. It is saying something when you have broken the all-time consecutive games won record three times. To have won over 70 games in a row three times over the last 14 years is a testament to the UConn student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans who continue to fuel the program. Kudos to the UConn women’s basketball program for continuing to raise the bar for the rest of the sport.”

Equally big:

Northwestern took the court for the first time since guard Jordan Hankins was found dead Monday from what was deemed a suicide. They “Played for J,” and beat Indiana, 80-67, on an emotional day.

The school’s men’s basketball and football teams were in the stands to support the women.

The Wildcats twitter page has a video of post-game press conferences, and a video of Amber Jamison scoring in Hankins’ jersey.
