Bulldogs lose dogfight versus Huskies
The No. 1 overall seed Connecticut Huskies took on fifth-seeded Mississippi State in Sweet 16 action Saturday. The Huskies were in complete control from start to finish, defeating the Bulldogs, 98-38.
Mississippi State shot just under 29 from the floor, which included missing all 14 of their three-point attempts. They also missed 5 of 7 free throw attempts and committed 18 turnovers. Freshman Teaira McCowan led the way for the Bulldogs with 10 points; Breanna Richardson and Victoria Vivians each contributed 6.
UConn shot nearly 63 percent from the floor and had 11 of 12 players score in the contest. The Huskies were led by Breanna Stewart with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Katie Lou Samuelson followed with 21 points and Morgan Tuck netted 19. The Huskies had 26 assists on 37 field goals and out-rebounded Mississippi State, 44-26.
UConn will face Texas in the Elite 8 Monday at 4 p.m. Pacific/7 p.m. Eastern for a chance to compete in the Final Four in Indianapolis.
