This is the first installment of WomensHoopsWorld’s player of the week. Each week, a five-member panel votes to determine the best collegiate player of the preceding week.
The first week back from holiday break saw numerous upsets and great player performances. But no showings were more compelling and valuable to their team than those of Ohio State guard Kelsey Mitchell, who is our player of the week.
In the No. 14 Buckeyes’ first outing Dec. 28, they opened Big Ten play against Minnesota. Mitchell had five three-point shots for a game-high 23 points, as well as dishing six assists in the win. Three nights later against Indiana, Mitchell again paced her team – this time with 31 points, six rebounds and five assists.
For 5-8 lightening fast Mitchell, high scoring is just another day at the office. But against their conference foes, she managed to control both games, despite being routinely double-and triple-teamed on defense. Mitchell is a gamer, and she makes other teams pay.
Player of the week runner-up: Jordin Canada, who had 18 and 22 points in UCLA’s two Pac 12 wins.
Also receiving votes: Kelsey Plum, Washington; Katie Lou Samuelson, Connecticut; Sydney Wiese, Oregon State.
