Michael Cooper apologizes

He’s sent a letter of apology to UCLA Coach Nikki Caldwell, her players and the school expressing his regrets.

That’s allright with me.

I’ve met and talked with Cooper numerous times, which is why his statement Sunday surprised me. He’s a cool guy.

We all make mistakes.

  1. I wish I was as unforgiving as you. I have always liked Coop, but I am not ready to forgive him for this one. The reason being is that some people don't think before they talk and then think an apology makes it all go away. That is just not unacceptable. Cooper's statement was so random and uncalled for. And why… What purpose did it serve. I just don't get it. Oh well.

  2. I guess because I'm in the teaching business, I'm used to giving people second, third and fourth chances. But forgiving doesn't mean I forget what happened.

I'd still be ashamed to be a Trojan. Cooper's players laughed at his "eff UCLA," after all. USC has now ascended to Duke's level: at the top of my #$%@ list.

Still waiting for an apology from Garrett……….

  3. Question for Kailapea.
Your post on Rebkell about the Cooper incident was worse than what Cooper said, or at least on his level. Then you give Kudos to Caldwell for her no comment on the incident. Isnt that a bit hypocritical? Stoop to Coopers level, with the expletive comments, while praising Caldwell for her no comment??

    Question for Sue

    What did Garrett do wrong?

IM in OC….and still a Sue fan ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I haven't been on rebkell since the first week in December, so I don't know what's been said there…..

From the LA Daily News story:

Or maybe Cooper was irked that a small section of UCLA students were standing during the game in the lower bowl and cheered on the Bruins.

USC athletic director Mike Garrett obviously had a problem. Garrett made a personal visit to the student section. One student said Garrett told them several times they needed to sit down or he would kick them out because paying customers behind them couldn't see. No ushers needed. The student didn't even know Garrett. They just thought it was a parent.

I found it unbelievable Garrett would make such a threat. Is he Glenn Nelson's brother? (just kiddin…)

  5. Kailapeas statement on Rebkell on 1/20/10 at 8:36pm

My opening statement to Cooper "F-you for being a jacka$$" I don't know if he thought it was funny or what, but it was simply just an unprofessional tacky statement. Kudos to Coach Caldwell for her no comment.
As for Garrett, first I am not a fan of his and wish he was gone. However, his actions werent out of line, IMO. The UCLA fans were sitting/standing in sect 106, right on the baseline opposite the USC bench. Garrett sits on the end/baseline seats in front of sect 106. The UCLA fans were right next to Garrett and his group, which included three children I would guess ages 4-6. When the USC band played Fight On, the UCLA fans stood and either waved car keys or waved dollar bills. The keys I believe were mocking USC football player Joe McKnight for his recent violation of using an SUV given to him, I am not sure what the money waving was about. In addition, the UCLA group did have some chants with the word "suck" in it. I heard it and so did some of the people in my group, we were in sect. 105. There may have been some other comments said as a few times I saw the USC dance team look over at the section with glares. Normally those girls have a smile on their face all of the time. The dance team sits on the floor directly in front of Garrett.
I am guessing that Garretts approach to the students was being diplomatic, and also a way to have them stop the chants.
I have no problem with students rooting for their teams and shouting when opposing teams are shooting foul shots and such, however I think the UCLA students, or what some called their band, may have pressed the chants beyond clean. None of this was mentioned in the LA Daily News article.

  6. FYI I'm in OC ripped on Cooper when he was hired, it's obvious the swing as you're a freind of a now trojan, as u know Sue in any educational establishment no educator would get away with saying F to anyone, I guess USC is the exception.

As far as the students go – anyone can stand, just watch TV, UCLA are quite tame compared to the East schools, USC should have placed them somewhere else.

  7. welllll, since you asked. ๐Ÿ™‚ i say that to compare kailapea's rebkell post to coop's post-game media conference is ludicrous. its apples and oranges.

as far as i know, kailapea is not the coach of a major university charged with building character, respect and sportsmanship in youngsters. coop is. and he gets a pretty paycheck for it, too. it didn't take him long to show his true colors.

those who watched him during his wnba stints know what an obnoxious jerk he can be.

the pac-10 should've laid a big fine on him to show its displeasure with such behavior, but they wussed out.

congrats to nikki for taking the high road. we wouldn't expect anything less from her.

    peace, out…
